Feast of the Black Nazarene (January 9, 2009)
Yesterday was the feast of the Black Nazarene at Quiapo, Manila. This year's celebration was different from the previous ones, regarding the fact that the persons behind this feast changed a lot of things for this day, like the route of the procession, the masses, the manner of celebrating the feast, plus the technological features being used by the police and the committee to ensure the success and security of the celebration.
First things first. Why am I posting this in the first place?
It's because I am really interested by how these people were compelled and motivated to do this practice, despite of the risks that may befall to them.
They have a variety of reasons to do so. Some of them just wanted to have fun, while most people have a certain wish, or desire that they want to be fulfilled like healing a sickness and the like, while some just use this event as an opportunity to actuate their petty deeds.
I've seen first-hand the actual influx of the devotees, as well as the preparations being made along the way while I was walking around UN Avenue.
I just hope that they do realize that it's not the idol that's actually being glorified here. It's the Good Lord himself that must be praised, even though he is unseen. Faith is enough for us to feel his undying presence..
I'm ending my post here.. :) Ta ta!
